The 36-year-old Modesto woman mysteriously disappeared Oct.
10, and investigators admit they have few clues.
The reward, to be announced this morning at the Carole-Sund Memorial Reward Foundation office in
Modesto, will hopefully "add power to the search," McCluskey's aunt said.
The foundation is sponsoring the reward.
Worn family members and volunteers briefly gathered late Sunday in Central Modesto before
continuing their search for McCluskey, also known as Dena Raley.
"I'm running out of energy," said Linda Bookman, McCluskey's aunt. "I'm tired and frustrated ... We
just want her back."
Bookman was the last person to see McCluskey before she disappeared. McCluskey had helped
Bookman move the day before and had stopped by Bookman's home to chat. She often would call her
aunt up to four times a day.
"She was my little pest," Bookman said smiling. "I miss her phone calls."
McCluskey's mother, Barbara West of Riverbank, recalled taking her daughter shopping two weeks
ago. She wanted to buy her a dress to wear to a relative's wedding.
"In the dress I picked out, she looked like a little Barbie doll ... We just had a really good day," she sobbed.
Relatives said McCluskey is close to everyone in her family and are concerned that foul play may
have had a role in her disappearance. Police had no new clues Sunday night.
McCluskey's boyfriend reported her as missing Wednesday. On Thursday police found her abandoned
1987 Nissan Stanza in the 2000 block of Oakdale Road. McCluskey's keys and purse were missing from
the unlocked car.
"This is something you see on television ... it happens to other people," West said. "I remember
talking to friends and co-workers about the Sund tragedy a few months ago, and I said I wouldn't
know what to do if something like this happened to one of my kids ... It happened."
The Carole Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation provides reward money on behalf of
financially strapped families whose loved ones have disappeared or have been murdered. The fund
was established by Francis and Carole Carrington in the aftermath of the February slayings of their
daughter and granddaughter, Carole and Julie Sund and family friend Silvina Pelosso.
In another missing persons ( Continued url copy/paste )
http://www.modbee.com/metro/story/0,1113,
109333,00.html
..................
MORE INFO
URGENT COPY SEND
October 19, 1999
This is the link to the webpage Watchdog and About.com put up on Dena Raley, the missing woman
from Modesto we are searching for. The
benefit will raise money to help in the search for Raley-McCluskey, said her stepmother,
Donna Raley. There is little to go on in theinvestigation, officer Kara Davis of the Police Department's Missing Persons Unit said Wednesday.
Raley-McCluskey was last seen Oct. 10, and her boyfriend reported her missing Oct. 13.
The next day, Raley-McCluskey's 1987 gray Nissan Stanza was found abandoned in the 2000 block of
Oakdale Road. Raley-McCluskey's keys and purse were missing from the unlocked car.
Raley-McCluskey's family members said she never missed work and usually had daily contact with
family and friends.
At the time of her disappearance, Raley-McCluskey had been working a temporary clerical job in the
Stanislaus County administrative building on H Street in downtown Modesto.
The missing woman has short blond hair and green eyes. "I just want to know where Dena's at," her mother said.
To help in the search, the Raley family on Monday announced it has added $15,000 to the McCluskey
reward fund, which is now at $25,000. The $15,000 comes from the family's personal savings.

Last month, the Carole Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation sponsored the initial $10,000
reward.
McCluskey's boyfriend reported her missing Oct. 13. The next day, police found her abandoned 1987
Nissan Stanza in the 2000 block of Oakdale Road in northeast Modesto. McCluskey's keys and purse
were missing from the unlocked car.
"We have few clues," police spokesman Kelly Huston said Monday. "What it's really going to take is for somebody to come forward. We never lose hope."
Anyone with information about Dena McCluskey's disappearance can call the Modesto Police
Department at 209-572-9500
http://www.modbee.com/metro/story/0,1113,118350,00.html
.........................
7 . "A Day For Dena "
Posted by LadyBug on Apr-12-00 at 07:10 AM (EST)
MODESTO, CALIFORNIA
Friends and family of Dena Raley-McCluskey rallied in the 2000 block of Oakdale Road Monday,
carrying signs announcing a reward. The rally was in remembrance of the woman's disappearance on
Oct. 10. Merry Ann Kain of Ceres brought her dog Sandy along for Monday's demonstration.
The spot on Oakdale Road was chosen because Raley-McCluskey's gray 1987 Nissan Stanza was found abandoned there in October. Raley-McCluskey hasn't been seen since, and police don't know
what happened to her.
http://www.modbee.com/metro/index/0,1151,,00.html
...................
8 . "A Year Ago Today Last Known Contact"
Posted by LadyBug on Oct-10-00 at 07:58 PM (EST)
Dena Raley McClusky
A bountiful personality
Who has touched many lives...
~~~
At that same time a year ago, nearby a festival was being held in Riverbank, CA.
Today I don't find an update on missing Dena, but I do find this:
Riverbank organizers brace for annual exposition
By ELIZABETH LEEDOM
BEE STAFF WRITER
(Published: Tuesday, October 10, 2000)
RIVERBANK -- "This is hell week," Kim Velasquez says, studying a mountain of cartons filled with wine glasses in a back room of the new Riverbank Chamber of Commerce office, a picturesque 1913 bank building.
"Don't, don't say that," the chamber manager pleads, watching in horror as her words are scribbled on a reporter's note pad.
But in this case, "hell" is anything but a swear word. It describes very well the countdown Velasquez is going through as Riverbank -- population less than 15,000 -- prepares to host a horde of 100,000 this weekend at its annual wine and cheese event. Family Will Search ! No MPD !"
Posted by LadyBug on Oct-12-00 at 02:42 AM (EST)
Woman's family criticizes police
By TY PHILLIPS
BEE STAFF WRITER
Wednesday, October 11, 2000)
Dena Michelle Raley-McCluskey disappeared a year ago Tuesday
With no crime scene or evidence of homicide, Modesto police classify the 36-year-old Modesto
resident as a missing person. But that's not how her family views it.
"We know she's been killed," said Donna Raley, her stepmother. "I have her fliers on the window of my
truck, and they'll stay there until her body is found. We want closure. We want this to be over."
On Oct. 10, 1999, Raley- McCluskey left her aunt's house in northeast Modesto after a short visit.
She hasn't been seen since.
Her boyfriend reported her missing to the Police Department, Sgt. Al Carter said. Then, on Oct. 14,
Raley-McCluskey's gray 1997 Nissan Stanza was found on Oakdale Road, between Briggsmore and
Floyd avenues.
The car was unlocked. Her keys and purse were inside. Dust on the vehicle indicated that it had been there for several days.
Police have made little progress in the year since.
"Right now, (the investigation is) stalled," Carter said. "There have been a lot of delays, which I know frustrates the family. But we haven't given up on it. It's not from a lack of concern."
Raley disagrees. She feels the Police Department hasn't exhausted every lead and hasn't taken the
case seriously enough.
An example of that, she said, is the Police Department's failure to search a 500- to 1,500-acre site where she said her stepdaughter's body might be buried.
Raley said she received a tip about the site and relayed it to police.
"They were very excited to get it," Raley said. "They said, 'This is what we needed.' They talked about bringing in cadaver dogs and searching on horseback. As of today, they haven't done a damned thing."
Carter confirmed that police have not searched the site.
One of the reasons for the lack of progress, he said, is the transfer of the case from one detective toanother. The first, Kevin Bertalotto, was shot during a robbery attempt at Gabriel Jewelers. The case then was shifted to Jon Buehler, who then got tied up several months in a court case.
Raley said she is not going to wait much longer.
"I'm very, very angry. (In a couple weeks), I'm going to get a group of people together and do my
own search. And it will not involve the Police Department. She's my daughter, and I raised her. I just want to bring my child home and put her away."
There is a $25,000 reward for information leading to Dena's safe return or to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her death. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective
Buehler at 572-9524.
http://www.modbee.com/metro/story/0,1113,202616,00.html
EDIT: OVER THE SEVERAL YEARS MANY OF THE LINKS IN THESE THREADS HAVE BEEN BROKEN, ARCHIVED OR DELETED. |
